Technology, Application, and Industrial Development of Industrial 5G Terminal Equipment

In June 2019, the 5G commercial license was officially issued, marking China's entry into the first year of 5G commercial use. At the same time, industrial manufacturing has also accelerated its transformation to digitalization, networking and intelligence. The industry's enthusiasm for promoting the integration of 5G and industrial Internet has continued to increase. By November 2023, the number of "5G+industrial Internet" projects in China has reached 8000. With the progress of 5G technology and the continuous expansion of application fields, China's "5G+Industrial Internet" has entered an important development stage of large-scale application and deep industrial integration.


Recently, the State Council issued the Action Plan for Promoting Large scale Equipment Renewal and Consumer Goods Swapping for New, which proposed to promote the application of intelligent manufacturing equipment and software, accelerate the construction and popularization of industrial Internet, and foster a new model of intelligent empowerment of the digital economy. This will promote industrial enterprises to accelerate the networking and intelligent transformation of equipment, and accelerate the integration, innovation and scale application of "5G+Industrial Internet". In the era of extremely fierce global industrial competition, how to grasp the market demand for the integration of 5G and industry, continuously consolidate the accumulation of 5G technology, explore the development trend of industrial 5G terminal equipment industry, and further accelerate the "cost reduction" landing of industrial 5G terminal equipment and 5G industrial modules in China is the core proposition for promoting the application of 5G industry at present.



The 5G communication module is located between the perception layer and the network layer, and is a core electronic component that encapsulates various chip devices and embeds multiple communication protocols, which can quickly provide 5G communication capabilities for terminal devices. The 5G communication module mainly consists of five parts: power management chip, transmission receiver, RF front-end, multi layer packaging chip, and 5G baseband, as shown in Figure 1. The existing universal modules are basically unable to balance safety, stability, and special functional requirements, making it difficult to meet the differentiated needs of different industries for 5G. On the basis of providing standard communication functions, the 5G custom function module meets the special needs of industry users by developing different software and hardware, such as 5G LAN (local area network), 5G precise timing, 5G network slicing, etc. The 5G industrial module based on 5G chips has become the core component of 5G networks in the industrial field. Compared with 5G communication modules, 5G industrial modules have more complex application scenarios, higher reliability requirements, and stricter usage conditions. They not only require the materials used to make the modules to be reliable, but also require components to support secondary development and customization functions.


Industrial 5G terminal equipment

Industrial 5G terminal equipment refers to industrial equipment that is embedded with 5G communication chips/modules and has the ability to directly connect to 5G networks, such as drones, robots, cameras, overhead cranes, unmanned mining cards, and other equipment with 5G communication capabilities. From the perspective of the connection between 5G communication modules and industrial equipment, industrial 5G terminal equipment can be divided into two categories: integrated industrial 5G terminal equipment and external industrial 5G terminal equipment.


Integrated industrial 5G terminal equipment includes industry application equipment that integrates 5G chips, 5G modules, and 5G communication boards, such as intrinsically safe and explosion-proof 5G mobile phones, 5G smart helmets, 5G AGVs (automatic directional vehicles), and other industrial equipment used in multiple industrial scenarios. External industrial 5G terminal equipment mainly consists of communication devices such as 5G industrial gateways, CPE, routers, etc. Among them, 5G industrial gateways embedded with 5G modules are widely used and support industrial protocols such as Modus, Siemens series, and Omron series. They can replace industrial gateways in existing network architectures, allowing existing devices to connect to 5G networks without the need for modification.
